How to submit a News Item

Thanks for choosing to submit an item to Vidding News! The link to submit is at the bottom of this post but please read through the information below first. I know its a bit long but hopefully it makes this process run smoother.

This newsletter relies on user submitted news. Please feel free to submit as many vidding related items as you like. The more items submitted, the better the newsletter will be.

1# News will only be included in the newsletter if it is submitted via the link at the bottom of this post

The link itself goes to a Google Form. Just follow the questions and read the description text for more information. The reason news is only accepted through the Google form is because I will be generating the post HTML from a spreadsheet and the Google Form helpfully collates the required information in one place.

2# Here is an example of how a news item will look

viddingnews: This is an example of a headline / This is a date 31 January with text after it
This is an example of a description. Only a couple of lines of text should be submitted which is about 300 characters. If you need more room you should move that information to the linked post.

The username link and date portion are both optional. The rest of the information is required and should match up to the fields requested in the Google Form.

3# What content is accepted

Items in the newsletter will be grouped according to categories and when submitting your news item you will be asked to select the appropriate category. Below is a breakdown of the categories as well as ideas for the kinds of content that can be submitted:

• Upcoming Dates: Such as signup deadlines, vid collection reveals, vid submission deadlines for conventions, etc


• Community / Challenge Announcements: For promoting a) new vidding communities, b) existing vidding communities (that haven't been featured in the newsletter previously), and c) new challenges / exchanges / fests that are focused on or allow vids.
  
  
  • For example:
    
    Accepted:
    - A community about Vid Recs
    - A community about Marvel Vids
    - A community about Marvel Fanart that accepts vids
    - A fandom specific exchange that accepts vids as art
    
    Not Accepted:
    - A community about Marvel in general (even though the comm may accept vid posts, the nature of the community itself is too broad)
    - A Big Bang challenge (even though you may be able to submit a vid for the art portion, you aren't guaranteed to be able to claim a story that is suited for a vid)
    
    If it becomes apparent that the above differentiation is too confusing or doesn't work, then I will revise this to only accept communities and challenges that are specifically vidding focused. If you are unsure, submit your news item regardless and the Editor will determine if it is appropriate.
  
  
  • Also note that Vidding focused challenges can post separate items for each phase of their schedule (ie. signup, assignments, posting, etc, using the "Upcoming Dates" category) but fandom specific challenges can only be posted once (otherwise we would be overrun with dates).


• Real Life Events: News about real life events such as conventions that have vidding components.


• Meta / Discussions: Links such as a) an article about or that mentions vidding from an official publication, b) a meta post from an individual's journal, c) a more informal discussion or question from an individual's journal.


• Resources: Links to resources that are useful for vidding such as resource lists, tutorials, etc.


• Other: Anything else that is related to vidding that you think would be cool to include.

4# What content is not accepted

At this time individual announcements of your new vid or vid rec posts will not be accepted as they will likely overwhelm the newsletter.

5# Linking Policy

All links submitted to the newsletter should be publicly accessible (ie. no locked posts) and any posts from personal journals (ie. meta or discussions) should only be submitted after permission has been given by the original poster (ie. they have a blanket linking policy or have been asked via a comment/email/message).

Please note that the Editor will not be personally checking that permission has been granted. It will be the responsibility of the person submitting the link to ensure they have the appropriate permission and it will be assumed that everyone is operating on good faith.

Links that do not require permission are challenge/event announcements that are publicly available and links from professional publications.

If this becomes and issue then this policy will be revisited.

6# Other things you should know

• Submitting your own content is welcome (and highly recommended).


• If you are running a challenge and you have multiple dates all ready scheduled (such as signups opening, signups closing, vids being revealed, etc), feel free to submit news items for them all at once. Just remember to fill in the “Posting Date” field at the end of the form so that the Editor will know to post the reminders at the relevant times.


• Links can be submitted from any platform, not just from Dreamwidth.


• At their discretion, the editor may decide to not include a link for any reason (but most likely because it's not vidding-related enough).


• The editor may also edit your submission for typos or readability.

Hi, I didn't expect people to find the comm so quickly so everything is still a bit of a work in progress. But the submission link has now been added if you want to have a look.

Yep, that's what I'm saying. I adjusted the post to make the wording clearer as per your example.

As someone else suggested, an idea is that individual vid post announcements are collated to to go in a monthly or bimonthly special newsletter but I am going to pose that question to everyone in the first issue.

But as it currently stands, they won't be going in the main newsletter.

another suggestion? set up an automatic cross-post to tumblr (and from there twitter). Just the link obvs not the full text

Yep, I plan to cross-post to any platform people want as long as it can be automatically done. I have set it up now for Tumblr and Twitter, just need to confirm it works :)

What I can do is submit it as a single post along with a few standalone.

And if there is something you want to snag yourself and highlight for the newsletter as a standalone, please feel free. Last, you have blanket permission to link to any of my public posts.

If you can submit your post as a single link with a couple of standalones, that would be great. Depending on the volume of links in the newsletter, then I may go in as grab some more. I have also added your Linkspam post to the latest newsletter.
